We went on the mountain hike that was offered by the staff at Memories Jibocoa Resort. This gives you a chance to see what the vegetation is like along the mountainous coastline in this area of Cuba. You will also get to see a great view of the resort and surrounding area. The hike up the mountain is steep, so bring sneakers or really sturdy sandals. Use the exposed roots for footings. The entrance to the path is on the road west of the guardhouse to Memories. It isn’t marked with a sign but is pretty easy to find. It is a good idea to go on the hike for the first time with your Resort guide. After that, you can do it as often as you like.
The trees were amazing, some were intertwined. Apparently they have a symbiotic relationship and do not actually harm each other. One tree at midpoint in the hike is huge.
When you get to the top of the mountain, if you turn right a path will take you to a beautiful look-off where you can see the resorts below and the coral reef. The reef looks like a maple leaf. If you are going to go snorkelling, it is a good idea to look for landmarks on the beach so you know where to head in for snorkelling.
If you turn left at the top of the mountain path, you will end up at a farm and small community. A gift store and two local restaurants are located there and some farms. People will come up offering you bananas and coconut pieces. You should leave a small tip of a CUC if you accept something. There is more than one thing being offered, so don’t just take the pushiest person’s wares. It is OK to say ‘Gracias No’. Remember that these are people’s homes, be respectful of that and only take a closer look if invited to do do.
After looking around you can walk downhill on a paved road and end up back at the resort area. It is a much easier walk back home than up the mountain. Be mindful of traffic on the road, some vehicles speed along pretty quickly.
There is also a morning walked offered by the resort where they take you on an easy walk to the nearby community. It is basically the last part of the Mountain Hike. It’s good to go with the guide, as he/she will take you into the farmer’s property and answer any questions you may have about the area.
