Holguin Province has several resorts along the northern coast of Cuba. Most of these are in the Guardalavaca area, which is known for being targeted by pirates many years ago. Guardalavaca literally means “guard the cow” in Spanish, so the presence of pirates makes sense. The City of Holguin is about an hour southwest of those and is inland. Aeropuerto Internacional Frank Pais is the airport serving this area, and it is about an hour from the airport to the resorts. This is a small airport, where you board the plane via portable stairs on the tarmac.
Holguin Province is a beautiful mountainous area with several natural parks. The beaches are smaller than other resort locations, but still offer a pleasant walk for those who like to do so. You won’t find walking out on the sandbars during low tide is an option like it is at Cayo Coco and Varadero. You will find; however, that there is excellent snorkelling right off the beach at some of the resorts.
