Adventures to have and places to see

Melia Las Antillas

We picked this resort because it was in Varadero and adults-only. There were also some excursions leaving Varadero that looked pretty exciting. The Hop On Hop Off bus seemed like a good way to see the area and other resorts located there. A nearby wildlife sanctuary was also appealing.

The food was reasonably good at the resort. We ate at the buffet quite a bit and had a burger at the beach bar.

The drinks at the resort were good, but getting table service was not easy. The servers tended to go around and collect glasses but not ask you if you wanted another drink (even if it wasn’t busy at all). So this seems more like a get it yourself at the bar place. There is a mojito bar that opens up at night that prepares a wide assortment of mojitos.

There were nightly shows at the resort which we enjoyed. One night they had a group of younger folks playing that put on a great show! The shows take place outside with the performers under an A-frame type of shelter. One night while the band was practicing I listened to a drummer play at least three different beats all at the same time. It was impressive.

The resort is very bright and cheerful looking with the canary yellow buildings. At night it was beautiful. Every second-day vendors would set up at the base of the spiral stairs and offer goods for sale. There were lots of walkways and places to explore on the property.

One really neat features of the resort was the waterways that went through it. In the main area you can see two resident nurse sharks! if you look closely at the pictures they are there lurking in the bottom. There is a shallow area at the edge of the waterway where they will rest their chins on the flat stones. It is really tempting to get too close- so tempting they have a sign there saying do not feed or pet them.

We stayed in a Garden View room at the resort. Unfortunately, there was a lack of water pressure and hot water. That was really disappointing and put a bit of a damper on the trip. From that point onward we pay much closer attention to Tripadvisor reviews regarding hot water (or water at all). Posts had complained about the water situation and we ignored them because they were six months old. Hopefully, they have that fixed by now. Other than that the room was cleaned daily.
